He Lost His Bitcoin for 12 Years — Then 61 BTC Suddenly Came Back

Sometimes, getting rich isn’t about perfect timing.
Sometimes, you just accidentally HODL for 12 years.
That is pretty much what happened to a British man known as “Chris”, who thought his Bitcoin was gone forever — only to get 61 BTC back more than a decade later, worth around £3.3 million.
And the story gets even crazier.
It All Started in 2011
Back in 2011, Bitcoin was still something most people had never heard of.
There were no Bitcoin ETFs, no giant crypto companies advertising during major sporting events, and certainly no Bitcoin headlines appearing every day.
Chris heard about Bitcoin from a friend who was convinced it could become something big.
So he decided to take a chance.
He invested around £1,500 through an early British Bitcoin exchange called Britcoin, which was later renamed Intersango.
At the time, Bitcoin could be bought for just a few pounds per coin.
It looked like a risky little experiment.
Nobody knew that those digital coins would one day be worth millions.
Then the Exchange Disappeared
Things started going wrong at Intersango around late 2012.
Trading services were gradually shut down, and by early 2014, the website had effectively disappeared.
Customers trying to withdraw their money received no response.
Chris was one of them.
He tried to access his account, only to discover that it had been frozen.
His Bitcoin was stuck.
At the time, his holdings were worth roughly £4,000 — painful money to lose, but nowhere near life-changing wealth.
So Chris tried to recover it.
Nothing worked.
Eventually, he accepted what seemed obvious:
The Bitcoin was gone.
And then came the painful part.
Bitcoin kept going up.
And up.
And up.
For years, Chris had to watch an asset he once owned become increasingly valuable while knowing he couldn't access it.
Eventually, he stopped checking the price altogether.
What was the point?
As far as he was concerned, those coins no longer existed.
One Last Attempt
Fast-forward to 2026.
After more than a decade, Chris's wife encouraged him to try one more time.
This time, he contacted CEL Solicitors, a UK law firm that handles cryptocurrency recovery cases.
And somehow, the impossible started to look possible.
The legal team began reconstructing a financial trail that was almost 15 years old.
They searched for old banking records to prove the original purchase, examined documents connected to the collapsed exchange and used specialist crypto-tracing tools to track the Bitcoin.
Imagine trying to find evidence of an online purchase you made nearly 15 years ago.
Most of us struggle to find an email from last month.
Yet the evidence was still there.
Chris instructed the lawyers in January 2026.
Just four months later, the case was settled.
And on May 28, something Chris probably thought he would never see happened:
All 61 Bitcoin were returned.
Not 10.
Not 30.
Not a cash settlement.
All 61 BTC.
From Lost Money to £3.3 Million
When Chris finally received his Bitcoin back, the 61 BTC were worth approximately:
£3,331,618.
An investment he had written off more than a decade earlier had suddenly turned him into a multimillionaire.
His family's reaction?
According to Chris, there were plenty of dropped jaws and wide eyes.
But after waiting 12 years, he wasn't exactly rushing to celebrate.
He kept checking his crypto account again and again just to make sure the Bitcoin was actually there.
Fair enough.
If 61 BTC suddenly appeared in your wallet after being missing for more than a decade, you'd probably check it 20 times a day too.
So What Is He Doing With the Money?
Chris isn't planning to blow everything on supercars and luxury watches.
Instead, he said he wants to use part of the money to move into a larger home that can better accommodate his mother-in-law, as well as help his son with loans related to his house.
And the rest?
He plans to keep some of his wealth in Bitcoin.
Which makes this perhaps one of the greatest accidental HODL stories ever.
Chris didn't patiently hold his Bitcoin through crashes, bull markets and crypto winters because he had diamond hands.
He held because he literally couldn't access it.
Twelve years later, that forced HODL turned 61 forgotten Bitcoin into a multimillion-pound fortune.
Sometimes the best investment strategy is patience.
And sometimes...
the exchange simply doesn't give you a choice.
